Ali's daughter: The Greatest is OK, watching game

(AP) ? Muhammad Ali's daughter knocked down rumors of her father being near death Sunday, saying he was at home watching the Super Bowl.

May May Ali said she talked to her father Sunday morning on the phone and he was fine. She said he was watching the Super Bowl at home in Arizona, wearing a Baltimore Ravens jersey.

"He's fine, in fact he was talking well this morning," she said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "These rumors pop up every once in a while but there's nothing to them."

The rumors were started by a report in a British tabloid quoting Ali's brother, Rahman, as saying the former heavyweight champion was near death. Rahman, though, said he hadn't seen his brother since last summer and had no contact with the family.

The report was widely repeated on the Internet, drawing expressions of condolences on Twitter and Facebook.

Ali suffers from Parkinson's disease. He celebrated his 71st birthday last month.

Immune cell 'survival' gene key to better myeloma treatments

Feb. 3, 2013 ? Scientists have identified the gene essential for survival of antibody-producing cells, a finding that could lead to better treatments for diseases where these cells are out of control, such as myeloma and chronic immune disorders.

The discovery that a gene called Mcl-1 is critical for keeping this vital immune cell population alive was made by researchers at Melbourne's Walter and Eliza Hall Institute. Associate Professor David Tarlinton, Dr Victor Peperzak and Dr Ingela Vikstrom from the institute's Immunology division led the research, which was published February 3 in Nature Immunology.

Antibody-producing cells, also known as plasma cells, live in the bone marrow and make antibodies that provide a person with long-term protection from viruses and bacteria, Associate Professor Tarlinton said. "Plasma cells are produced after vaccination or infection and are responsible for the immune 'memory' that can persist in humans for 70 or 80 years. In this study, we found that plasma cells critically rely on Mcl-1 for their continued survival and, without it, they die within two days," he said.

Dr Peperzak said the team was surprised to find that plasma cells used this as a 'failsafe' mechanism in controlling their survival. "One of the interesting things we found is that because plasma cells rapidly destroy Mcl-1 proteins within the cell yet depend on it for their survival, they need continuous external signals to tell them to produce more Mcl-1 protein," Dr Peperzak said. "This keeps the plasma cells under tight control, with Mcl-1 acting like a timer that constantly counts down and, if not reset, instructs the cell to die."

Plasma cells are vital to the immune response, but can be dangerous if not properly controlled, Associate Professor Tarlinton said. "As with any immune cell, plasma cells are really quite dangerous in many respects and need to be tightly controlled," he said. "When they are out of control they continue to make antibodies that can be very damaging if there are too many. This happens in conditions such as myeloma -- a cancer of plasma cells -- and various forms of autoimmunity, such as systemic lupus erythamatosus or rheumatoid arthritis, where there are excessive levels of antibodies."

Myeloma is a blood cancer that affects more than 1200 Australians each year, and is more common in people over 60. It is caused by the uncontrolled production of abnormal plasma cells in the bone marrow and the build up of damaging antibodies in the blood. Rheumatoid arthritis and lupus are autoimmune diseases in which the antibodies produced by plasma cells attack and destroy the body's own tissues.

Associate Professor Tarlinton said that his hope was that the discovery could be used to develop new treatments for these conditions. "Myeloma in particular has a very poor prognosis, and is generally considered incurable," Associate Professor Tarlinton said. "Now that we know Mcl-1 is the one essential gene needed to keep plasma cells alive, we have begun 'working backwards' to identify all the critical molecules and signals needed to switch on Mcl-1 and keep the cells alive. Our hope is that we will identify some point in the internal cell signalling pathway, or a critical external molecule, that could be blocked to stop Mcl-1 being produced by the cell. This would be an important new platform for diseases that currently have no specific or effective treatment, such as myeloma, or offer new treatment options for people who don't respond well to existing treatments for diseases such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis."

This research was supported by the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia, Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, European Molecular Biology Organization and the Victorian Government.

Florida surgeon at center of Sen. Menendez trips

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? To some, Dr. Salomon Melgen was a miracle worker who brought sight to the blind. To others, he was a smooth political player known for rubbing elbows and jet-setting.

Whichever version of Melgen roused the interest of the FBI, which raided his offices this week, their investigation has illuminated the surgeon's ability to build ties to a host of Democratic lawmakers.

Foremost among them is Sen. Robert Menendez of New Jersey, whose friendship with Melgen has yielded fundraisers, campaign contributions and trips on a private plane. Menendez said this week he did nothing wrong, and flatly denied allegations reported by The Daily Caller, a conservative website, that he traveled on Melgen's plane to the Dominican Republic for sex with prostitutes.

Though facts remain piecemeal, a fuller portrait of Melgen has emerged. There are photos of the beaming doctor sandwiched between Menendez and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a trail of checks written to politicians and a web of business interests that apparently fueled his wealth.

Melgen, 58, is a native of the Dominican Republic who has lived in the U.S. since at least 1980, holding medical posts around the country while building a reputation as a top ophthalmologist. He has a wife and two children.

Calls to his home and office were not answered, but his attorney has said he did nothing wrong.

On the website for his Vitreo-Retinal Consultants Eye Center practice, he is called a pioneer and an innovator, a front-runner in treatment of macular degeneration, a common eye disorder. He has treated "presidents, governors, politicians, celebrities and actors," according to his website.

Patricia Goodman, his office manager and personal assistant for a decade until cancer forced her to quit in 1999, remembers an endless stream of patients coming from all over the world for his care.

"He was just the best surgeon," she said, "and we had people that would come in that were blind and told they would never see again and he brought back their sight."

When Goodman was suffering through cancer, her paychecks never stopped, nor did Melgen's concern. He would often provide his services for free to people who could not afford it.

She's reluctant to say anything negative about him, except to say he was a "ladies man" and liked "living on the edge." She refused to elaborate.

As Goodman remembers it, a single big-name introduction appeared to fuel Melgen's entrance into the world of politics. Then-Gov. Lawton Chiles of Florida, a Democrat, went to Melgen for eye surgery in 1997 and later tapped the doctor for a state panel on HMOs. Not long afterward, he became a reliable donor to Democratic power brokers and a frequent host of fundraisers at both his waterfront, 6,500-square-foot home near North Palm Beach and his house in the Dominican Republic in the exclusive residential resort community of Casa de Campo.

Goodman coordinated logistics for the fundraisers ? buffets, bands and a huge patio where revelers could dance. She remembers events with former Sens. Christopher Dodd and Bob Graham and former Dominican President Leonel Fernandez. Melgen basked in the newfound attention.

"He loved the limelight, he loved it," Goodman said. "He loved being with the politicians."

Last year, Melgen's practice gave $700,000 to Majority PAC, a super political action committee set up to fund Democratic candidates for Senate. Aided by Melgen's donation, the super PAC became the largest outside political committee contributing to Menendez's re-election, spending more than $582,000 on the senator's behalf, according to an analysis of federal election records.

Melgen and his immediate family have given tens of thousands more to other political causes, including directly to Menendez.

Even as Melgen cultivated a political profile in the U.S., he was never gone long from his homeland.

Fernandez, the ex-Dominican president, named him as an alternate delegate to the United Nations during his first term and an ambassador assigned to the Foreign Ministry in his second.

Meanwhile, a private plane owned by Melgen's company, DRM Med Assist LLC, made more than 100 trips to the Dominican Republic since July 2009, an Associated Press review of flight records found. Nearly a dozen of those trips showed brief stopovers at Washington, D.C.-area airports, although it's unclear who was on board because Federal Aviation Administration rules don't require private aircraft to file flight manifests.

Menendez repaid Melgen $58,500 for two 2010 trips he characterized as personal. The reimbursement was made Jan. 4 in response to the ethics complaint, but there was no public disclosure of it until this week. The reimbursement is significant for a politician who's not wealthy by Washington standards. Disclosure forms show Menendez's net worth as less than $700,000.

Whether Melgen's access or checkbook brought him any influence remains unclear.

In 2007, Menendez introduced a Senate bill, "The Glaucoma Screening Act," that proposed $10 million in grants to firms that would have in part expanded eligibility to Hispanics who are at risk of glaucoma. Melgen's clinic was not specifically cited in the bill and whether he would have benefited is not clear.

Menendez's spokeswoman Tricia Enright noted he had a long history of working with the Friends of the Congressional Glaucoma Caucus, whose leader asked the senator's staff to introduce the bill. Regardless, the legislation never made it out of committee.

The senator appeared to have weighed in on behalf of one of Melgen's companies last July during a Senate hearing, complaining about several instances where Latin American governments did not honor obligations with businesses. Menendez pressed two Obama administration officials about an unidentified company that provided cargo screening services at Dominican Republic ports.

Media reports in the Dominican Republic have highlighted a contract feud between the country's government and a port security firm, I.C.S.S.I.

The company was hired to provide X-ray screening at Dominican ports starting in 2002, according to a 2003 document reviewed by the AP. In recent years, the Dominican government had begun to balk at continuing the contract, citing concerns about high costs.

In 2011, I.C.S.S.I. was bought by a Florida firm, Border Security Services LLC, which records show is managed by Melgen. The New York Times reported Friday the port contract could be worth as much as $50 million a year.

More details inevitably will spill out as both Melgen and Menendez become tangled in an investigation. The Senate Ethics Committee is looking into whether Menendez accepted inappropriate gifts from Melgen and FBI agents carted away evidence seized from Melgen's offices, but refused to say why.

"The government has not informed Dr. Melgen what concerns it may have," said his attorney, Lawrence Duffy. "We are confident that Dr. Melgen has acted appropriately at all times."

Super Bowl Indulgence? Start Walking

Feb 2, 2013 7:00am

Peter Dazeley/Getty Images

Your waistline was just shrinking back to normal after the holidays and now along comes the Super Bowl.

According to the Calorie Control Council and the Snack Food Association, armchair quarterbacks scarf down 30 million pounds of snacks on Super Bowl Sunday including 11.2 million potato chips, 8.2 million pounds of tortilla chips, 4.3 million pounds of pretzels, 3.8 million pounds of popcorn, and 2.5 million pounds of nuts.

Add in the beer, pizza, hot wings and anything else with?calories fans can get their hands on and the average spectator consumes 1,200 calories and 50 grams of fat as part of their pigskin celebration, the Council found.

Click Here for More Coverage of Super Bowl XLVII

Let?s put it in perspective. Say you?re a 49ers fan. You decide to inhale a huge plate of chicken wings smothered with cool ranch dressing. That?ll set you back somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,500 calories. To burn that off, get ready to hoof it from San Fran?s Chinatown to the Golden Gate Bridge, according to the website Hopstop.com ? a distance of about five miles.

If you?re a Ravens fan who devours a slice of pepperoni pizza, you?ll have 400 extra calories to deal with. ?To burn those off, you?ll need to walk the equivalent of the distance between?Baltimore?s?Fort McHenry and the Washington Monument. Actually, plan on making the trip between those land marks at least three times. Who stops at one slice?

Registered dietitian Jennifer Neily said when your eyes are glued to the game, you?re often blind to what you?re putting in your mouth. She finds that people are often surprised when they realize how many calories they put away in the time it takes to play four quarters, and horrified when they learn how long it takes to burn them off.

But Neily said so long as you don?t eat like it?s Super Bowl Sunday every day, you should be fine. She looks at it like this,? It?s one meal, one day. That?s not going to make or break you.?

To dial down the game day calorie count, Neily advised eating a small meal before the kick off so you?re not ravenous as the game gets underway. Alternate alcoholic and sugary beverages with water or seltzer so you don?t drown yourself in excess calories. Scan the table before filling your plate so you can eat only what you really want. And set a time to stop eating completely ? half time works ? and then stick with it.

If you do overdo game day calories, Neily advised getting right back on track the next day with a sensible diet and some moderate intensity exercise. That goes double if your team loses. What?s the point in drowning your sorrows in a bowl of nachos? There?s always next year.

Is your HDTV Super Bowl-ready? Set-up tips for the best picture

Surveys show that about 20 percent of HDTV owners don't watch the big game and other programs in true high definition due to improper setup. Our step-by-step checklist will help you ensure that your HDTV is ready for Super Bowl viewing with the best, sharpest picture.

Ensuring your HDTV source
There are three possible ways to see the game in high definition: via cable, via satellite or over the air with an antenna.

For cable or satellite, you need to make sure you have the right equipment and settings to see the game in glorious high definition. First, make 100 percent sure your cable or satellite box is a high-definition model. If you don't specify an HD model, sometimes cable and satellite providers will rent you a standard def box. Most HD boxes have either the letters ?HD? or the words ?high definition? on their front panel. If it doesn?t, it's probably a standard def model and you'll need to get a replacement before the game.

You also need a high-definition wire to connect between the box and your HDTV. The best and least expensive one is called HDMI. It carries both the picture and sound over a single cable. Most installs need at least a two meter (6 ft.6 inches) or three meter (9 ft. 9 inches) cable. HDMI cables do not tolerate sharp bends well, so make sure the cable is long enough. Retail stores usually charge $25 to over $100 for an HDMI cable, but there are cheaper ones if you look. Amazon and other online retailers also sell them for under $10, and often with free shipping.

Cable and satellite companies still simulcast the standard definition and high definition versions of the same programming on different channels, so be sure to confirm that you are getting the HD signal. Once you've tuned in to the CBS HD channel and confirmed reception, make sure to set the box?s resolution to your HDTV's resolution. If you have a 1080p HDTV, set the box?s output to 1080i (in this case, the TV automatically converts the ?i,? for interlaced, into ?p,? for progressive ? don't worry about the definitions). If you have a 720p HDTV, set the box?s output to 720p.

You should also make sure the set top box's aspect ratio is set to 16x9 mode, and not 4x3. If this is not set correctly you will see a smaller, cropped image.

As for receiving the game over the air, you will need an antenna and you'll also have to find out if your local CBS station?s transmitter is within roughly 25 miles from your home. The good news is, there HDTV over-the-air tuner is built-in to all HDTVs. The bad news is, you need to have a line of sight to the transmitter tower. If there's a building, hill or mountain between you and the tower, you probably won?t be able to get reliable over the air reception. Check with antennaweb.org for more information about what size and type of antenna you need, as well as the direction you need to point it for each network. Because of all that is involved, the vast majority of viewers choose cable or satellite instead.

Adjusting the TV
First confirm the HDMI cable is connected from the set top box to an HDMI input on your TV. This should be the only connection between your cable box and your TV. Once you've selected that input and can see the cable programming in (hopefully) glorious high definition, it's time to open your TV's settings.

Your HDTV will have settings for aspect ratio, generally with a setting labeled Full. Select that. If your set has a sub-control called Dot-by-Dot, Native or Just Scan, then select one of those. (Panasonic TVs have a sub-menu that lists Size One or Size Two. Choose Size Two.) All these modes allow the HDTV to place the entire image on the screen without cropping it. This control gives the viewer everything the director sees at the highest resolution. Your HDTV will now match the broadcast HD signal pixel for pixel. On some HDTVs, this control may be grayed out if the set?s picture mode is set to Vivid or Sports ? you'll have to change it to Standard, Movie or Custom.

Yes, I did just say you should not use the Sports preset picture mode to watch the Super Bowl, and you should also avoid anything that says Game, or Vivid or Dynamic. It sounds counter intuitive, but these presets are generally made to produce the brightest image on the showroom floor, not the best picture in a home. Use modes such as Movie or Custom as the best starting point for user control optimization. If your set does not have those modes, simply choose Standard.

Many LED and LCD TVs that have 120Hz, 240Hz or 480Hz refresh allow users to reduce blurry motion by engaging these circuits during sports programs. Different set makers call them different names such as Motion Plus or Motion Flow, etc. This mode must be in the ?On? position to get crisper motion. Consult your TV's menu for this control, or look at the owner?s manual. Plasma TVs have full motion resolution without these circuits, so no motion adjustment is necessary on a plasma.

If you want to maximize your settings before the game, make sure you follow our guide to settings here. Ideally, you would even use a test disc like the Disney WOW: World of Wonder on Blu-ray disc to optimize your picture settings. Since you may not have time to grab that before the game, try out the new THX app for iOS devices here. It's free.

By spending a few minutes going over this super-simple list, you can be assured that you, your friends and your family are viewing the Super Bowl and all other future programs with the best high-def image your HDTV is capable of producing. Now you?ll really be ready for some football.
