US women overcome sloppy play, beat Croatia 81-56

LONDON (AP) ? The U.S. women's team threw the ball away and struggled from the field. This was one sloppy performance for an Olympic opener.

It also was another victory.

Maybe it was first-game nerves or a hangover from the opening ceremony, but the U.S. didn't look like the powerhouse expected to dominate the London Games until the fourth quarter ? when it pulled away for an 81-56 victory over Croatia.

"It's just one game, one day," U.S. guard Sue Bird said. "You have to come to play that day, if you don't anything can happen."

The Americans just beat Croatia by 54 on July 21. Easy victories are expected from this team, which has won 34 straight Olympic contests and four consecutive gold medals.

That didn't happen Saturday.

"There was a little jitters, probably a little sluggishness," Bird said. "For the most part we didn't finish off plays we normally finish off. We allowed a team that when they get going are known to spread out the floor and try to hit as many 3s as they can, stay with us."

Coming into the Olympics, coach Geno Auriemma said he was hoping the Americans could play a style of basketball that would be entertaining and help grow the women's game internationally.

That was certainly not the case at the start of this one.

Despite missing its first 14 shots, Croatia hung tough for the first 30 minutes before the Americans finally pulled away.

"We have five players who have never been in the Olympics before so they are going to be nervous. Everybody was a little nervous," Auriemma said. "We're better than we showed, but I don't know that we're going to be great right off the bat."

The U.S., which has dominated its opponents en route to the last four gold medals, led 53-49 early in the fourth quarter before a 16-0 run put the game out of reach.

Angel McCoughtry started the burst with consecutive layups and Tamika Catchings capped it with a three-point play that made it 69-49. Swin Cash also had a three-point play in the spurt.

McCoughtry finished with 13 points for the U.S., which got back to its hotel at 3 a.m. after Friday's opening ceremony. Tina Charles had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Candace Parker finished with 11 points and 13 boards.

"We know we can play better and will," Parker said.

Jelena Ivezic scored 22 points and Marija Vrsaljko added 19 for Croatia, which was making its Olympic debut. Vrsaljko missed the previous matchup last Saturday as she was getting married.

While the Americans imposed their will on offense in that contest, they struggled Saturday.

The U.S. built a 9-0 lead as Croatia missed its first 14 shots. The Americans could have been up a lot more, but missed a lot of easy shots and turned the ball over. They finished with 21 turnovers.

"Defensively we were great in the first quarter, we were running, blocking shots just couldn't score and that hurts," Parker said. "When you look up at the scoreboard at end of first and it's 9-4, it's deflating. We just have to do better than that."

Actually it was 11-4, but Parker is correct ? they will have to play better.

Vrsaljko finally got the Croatians on the board with a lay-in with 2 minutes left in the first quarter. The U.S. built its lead to 21-9 and looked poised to take command before going cold from the floor.

Croatia scored the next 14 points, capped by Luca Ivankovic's lay-in that gave the team its first lead of the game. Ivezic's 3 minutes later made it 26-23.

Diana Taurasi had seen enough, hitting consecutive 3s to restore the Americans' advantage. The U.S. led 31-28 at the half.

"We played very well for 30, 32 minutes," Croatia coach Stipe Bralic. "We played smart and we played good defense. But we played against maybe the best women's team ever. They got 27 second-chance points and that shows you how strong they are."

It was the second straight Olympics that the Americans struggled in their opener. They trailed the Czech Republic 13-2 before winning by 40 at the Beijing Games.

The U.S. men's basketball team, who is also a heavy favorite to win the gold, didn't make the women's opener. It had practice at the same time. The two teams marched together in the opening ceremonies and are staying in the same hotel.

Next up for the U.S. is Angola, which lost to Turkey 72-50 in its Olympic debut. The Americans also will face China, Turkey and the Czech Republic in pool play. The U.S. beat the Czechs in the finals of the 2010 world championship to qualify for the London Games.

The Czech Republic lost its pool opener, falling to China 66-57. Also Saturday, Russia rallied past Canada 58-53, France beat Brazil 73-58, and Australia routed host Britain 74-58.

Preston Tucker's 1948 car an incredible pacesetter - The News Herald

A story about Preston Tucker?s struggles ran in the Pittsburgh Press on June 12, 1949. It was reprinted as part of a story on Tucker and his Tucker 48 in the March edition of Hemmings Classic Car magazine.

This is a model of a Tucker car that?s nearly 11 inches long, just over 4 inches wide and about 3 1/2 inches tall. Photos by Dave Chapman

Even in cruise-crazed collectors? panoramas, one automobile continues to draw admirers for its ingenuity: Preston Tucker?s revolutionary 1948 Tucker Torpedo.

Still fascinating 60-plus years after its introduction, the advanced vehicle reflected the genius of the man himself, a Prohibition-era motorcycle cop in his early days in Lincoln Park.

Even automotive wizards of that era stood in awe of Tucker?s innovations: seat belts, a pop-out windshield, a padded dashboard, reinforced frames, a cyclops headlight and a powerful engine and drivetrain. Almost all of them have since been incorporated into vehicles.

Tucker himself was an extraordinary man. A Lincoln Park High School graduate, he had no college education, no formal training except classes at Detroit?s Cass Technical High School, and tinkering on cars while working at Cadillac, Chrysler, Studebaker and Ford.

Not all of his patents were automotive related. He built Indianapolis 500 racers at one time, and also designed and built a gun turret used on World War II aircraft.

Born in Capac in Michigan?s Thumb region, Tucker moved with his family to a Warwick Street home in Lincoln Park, long ago demolished and now the site of a parking lot.

He always considered Lincoln Park his home, and was active in civic events. He worked as a motorcycle policeman during the Prohibition era and even entered politics as an unsuccessful mayoral candidate in 1935. Tucker died at age 53 in Brazil, where he was forming an auto manufacturing company. His body was returned home for burial at Michigan Memorial Park in Huron Township.

Besides its molded lines and sleek appearance, the ?48 Tucker Torpedo sported a third headlight that rotated in any steering direction to illuminate the path of a turn. This ?cyclops eye? was featured in ?Tucker: The Man and His Dream,? a movie by a former Detroiter, Francis Ford Coppola.

The directional headlight was copied from Tucker?s stint as a Lincoln Park motorcycle cop with Floyd Crichton, later to become police chief. Prohibition was an unpopular law of the Roaring ?20s, and plenty of Canadian whiskey was being smuggled from Detroit River hideouts north up Southfield Road through Ecorse and Lincoln Park.

The duty of Crichton and Tucker, swift on their Indian Zundapp motorcycles (forerunner of Harley-Davidsons), was to pursue and chase the bootleggers out of town. That?s when a headlight turning with the motorcycle?s handlebars became an idea for a feature of the ?48 Tucker Torpedo. Continued...

Tucker was not timid in power for his automobile. He used a helicopter engine rated over 100 mph at 2,000 rpms, and a zero-to-60 mph time of 10 seconds. At least one Tucker had 200,000 odometer miles before needing major repair.

Unlike other cars of its era, the Tucker featured several safety measures. A unibody was welded to an automotive frame to eliminate body rattles and provide a safety cage. Bumpers were mounted on springs to absorb shock. The steering wheel was a breakaway design so it wouldn?t ?spear? the driver in a crash.

The 1948 Tucker Torpedo is not likely to be seen in the cruises that attract hordes of viewers. Of the 51 made, 47 survive, with only three in Tucker?s home state.

I need advice. I'm at my wit's end with my sixteen-month-old son. As a mother of four children, I really thought I'd been through it all with my three older kids (3, 4.5 and 7). But this little one has really thrown a fast ball on me. What has worked with my other kids has not worked with him.

He thinks it is funny to hit, pull hair, and even bite. An example: I was working in the basement for a few hours last night (I work part-time from home) while my husband watched the kids. When I came upstairs, my son ran up to me with his little chubby arms reached out. Of course I picked him up. Then he promptly hit me in the face and tried to pull my hair while laughing. I do not tolerate this behavior. I promptly firmly grasped his little hand, said "no" and put him in his room. Of course he screamed and pounded on the door. After a few minutes, I went and picked him up again. He tried to hit me again and we repeated the process. I go through this with him all the time. He hits the other kids, pulls their hair, etc...

I have tried to avoid spanking my kids throughout my parenting years. There have been a few instances where we've spanked our kids, but we've never used a belt (I will never do that), and it has always been with our hand. I have tried firmly "bopping" my little one's diapered bottom, but he just thinks that's funny. Should I resort to a stinging swat? I'm trying to teach him to be gentle, so I'm not sure if that is the best approach either.

At any rate, I am exhausted. He is everywhere. He learned to climb out of his crib, he climbs on the table (I of course don't tolerate this) and if someone forgets to close the bathroom door it's a disaster. It's not like he has no attention span. He will sit on my lap and listen to a story. But what I'm doing does not seem to be getting through to him.

Does anyone have advice/ideas?

He sounds like my nephew. ALLL BOY!

My older daughter was a biter. Omg. She broke skin on me TWICE (ages 1-2 years), bit a kid at school (almost got kicked out of her daycare!), bit my mom...we tried time outs, etc, but she wasn't getting it...until I bit her back one day (she bit my shoulder and drew blood). Not my proudest moment, but it worked. I didn't bite hard, but enough to where she was shocked and said, "OUCH!" and after that, she didn't bite another person.

I don't know about the other stuff...other than he's just a rough little guy. Maybe some other posters have suggestions.

LOL, this was the first thing that occurred to me, but I thought I'd probably be accused of savagery. I was apparently a biter, too. I'm told I bit my grandfather (who I probably loved more than any other person growing up; I mean, I worshipped this man). My grandfather promptly bit me back, and that was that. Never bit anybody again.

Anther thing is to figure out what he considers a punishment. Every kid is different. You've already established that spanking is a non-starter, and that sending him to his room is effective, so continue to explore that. Take away (for a week or so, not forever) a toy that he values. No treats, maybe. In other words, determine what pushes his buttons.

But seriously, biting back (not too hard) may do the trick. It apparently did for me.

He doesn't know what hurting is, for him it's all one big joke where he gets the other one all upset (that's so much fun). Swat him in the hand the second he pulls that crap and he'll get the message.

Quote:

don't use the spanking route, "Violence is okay if you are bigger" is the message you will convey. He's only 16 months and has no comprehension of future consequences.
That's false. He has no comprehension of future consequences if they are not immediate and clear enough.

Quote:

Just remain consistent, when he hits you tell him no hitting and place him in the playpen or other safe zone he can't escape from.
One swat is 10x more efficient than that for a 16 month old child that won't even comprehend the link between what he has done and the punishment.

I come from a big family. Lots of cousins. Nobody would beat on each other because we all knew how that would be handled by our parents. When our parents stopped having control over us we were old enough to understand how to behave.

I know that the new age says corporal punishment this and that. Thing is, i never saw a single scientific article explaining why a responsible parent can't dish out a swat on an misbehaving kid. The articles that do exist are philosophical and use unsubstantiated sentences like the one you used here:

Quote:

"Violence is okay if you are bigger" is the message you will convey.
Given that the older generations basically all had been beaten by their parents why did society just not crumble in a spiral of violence?

I'll tell you why, because the message you pass is not that unless you act like an idiot and hit the kid over nothing. The message you pass is that behaving like a wild animal has very clear consequences.

Want a clear view of this? Compare the way kids behaved in school back then and how they do now. Were they more violent in the past when they were being belted everyday? Did they do more crimes? Were there more teenage murderers?

Of course not, so, where does that leave that idea that dishing a swat is going to turn a kid into a violent person?

Lets face it. That idea that a swat is that much of a trauma for a kid was made up by certain psychologists who spend their lives in offices thinking about how to raise a child and not nearly enough time actually doing it.

I would take an old father or mother advice on how to do things over some guy/girl who spent years to have a diploma on the wall while avoiding actually doing the stuff that are supposedly experts at.

The Hearing Center: An Educator About the Ear

Many people take for granted the daily sounds their ears encounter: the wind blowing, a child laughing, the alarm clock going off. They also may not know how or why they hear or don?t hear these important sounds around them. However, the audiologists and medical professionals in a hearing center work to educate their patients on the workings of the ear. The ear is composed of three main parts, all of which are important to its functioning.

The outer ear, which can also be called the pinna, is the visible part of the ear (the part that holds earrings). The job of the pinna is to collect sound waves. The concave shape allows for easy collection of these waves. The ear canal is also an important part of the outer ear. Once the sound waves are captured by the pinna, they begin to travel down into the ear via the ear canal.

These vibrations will eventually reach the middle ear. Composed of the eardrum and ossicles, it has a unique job. The eardrum works to turn the inaudible sound waves into vibrations. Once the sound waves have reached the eardrum, they cause it to vibrate, much like what happens when someone beats a real drum. The next stop is the ossicles, a group of very small bones. These bones work with each other simultaneously all day long to ensure that all of the vibrations are transferred to the inner ear.

The inner ear contains the cochlea. The cochlea is very important. Many patients in a hearing center are left with hearing problems due to damaged cochlea. Depending on the extent of this damage, cochlear implants may be used to regain some use of the inner ear, allowing for partial hearing restoration. The cochlea contains fluid, and this fluid moves as the vibrations become audible. The hairs that surround the cochlea also move as the vibrations reach them. The hairs and the fluid in the cochlea work together to create nerve signals. The nerve signals are then sent to the brain where they are decoded and registered as a specific sound. All of this happens instantaneously and occurs all day.

The inner ear also has another important job. It is what helps keep everyone balanced, so we stand upright instead of falling to the floor. The fluid in the inner ear lets the brain know what position someone is standing in. This allows for the brain to compensate by sending messages to engage specific muscles in the arms or legs.

Education is one of the key goals of a hearing center. It is extremely important that a patient understands the components of their ear. Whenever a patient knows what is going on in their body, it is much easier for them to comprehend what the audiologist is telling them. This allows patients to make the best possible decisions about their hearing treatments.

Now that you?ve gotten a primer on how your ear works, you may be ready to visit a Poughkeepsie NY hearing center to learn more about possible treatments for any auditory problems you?ve been having. To learn more about your options, visit http://www.miracle-ear-poughkeepsie.com.

In German circumcision debate, 'us vs them' fears

The German Parliament debates because the government wants to reassure Jewish and Muslim parents that they will continue to be able to circumcise their sons according to religious tradition, despite a local court's ruling that the practice amounts to bodily harm. (AP Photo/Gero Breloer)

(AP) ? Rabbi David Goldberg had performed about 25 ritual circumcisions this year before a regional court ruled in June that the practice amounted to causing criminal bodily harm.

Despite the decision, he expects to perform the same number in second half of the year.

"I haven't changed anything," said Goldberg, one of Germany's few mohels ? a person trained in the Jewish ritual of circumcision.

Though the Cologne court's decision has raised fears among Muslims and Jews that circumcising their children could get them into legal trouble, it has had little practical effect in reducing religious circumcisions ? especially since the government has weighed in with assurances to both communities that their practices will be respected.

But both Jews and Muslims say that a more lasting effect may be "us vs. them" tensions that have raised an invisible barrier between secular Germans and religious minorities.

"It is no surprise that the Catholics and the Protestants have stood behind the Muslim community in this case and denounced the verdict," said Aiman Mazyek, the chairman of Germany's Central Council of Muslims. "In my opinion this is no picture of tolerance or religious freedom from a modern civilization. It is a step backward."

Jews are religiously required to circumcise baby boys on the 8th day after birth in a ceremony seen as their entrance into a covenant with God. Muslims also usually perform the procedure early in a boy's life, though sometimes wait until later in childhood.

In the Cologne decision, announced June 26, the court said circumcising young boys on religious grounds amounts to bodily harm even if parents consent to the procedure. The charge is punishable by anything from a fine to up to five years in prison.

The ruling came in the case of the circumcision of a 4-year-old Muslim boy that led to medical complications.

The boy was circumcised at the request of his parents. He developed complications two days later and was rushed to the hospital. Prosecutors charged the doctor, who was acquitted when a Cologne court found that he had performed the procedure properly, and that he had the parents' permission to carry out the circumcision.

But prosecutors appealed, and the higher Cologne court ruled that in a case of circumcision for non-medical reasons, the welfare of the child outweighed the religious rights of the parents. The acquittal of the doctor, however, was upheld because the court said the law had been unclear.

Though not precedent setting for other courts in Germany, the ruling prompted an outcry from Jewish and Muslim groups across Europe, while in Israel the German ambassador was invited to explain the decision to the Knesset.

Germany's main Catholic and Protestant organizations also condemned the ruling as an attack on religious freedom. The president of the German Medical Association said the ruling could even endanger children, by forcing circumcisions to be performed under possibly unsanitary conditions outside of hospitals.

Caught in the middle were people like Moishe Furer, a rabbinical student in Berlin whose son Elchanan was born five days before the decision was announced.

The native of Moldova said his own parents had to bribe a doctor when he was born to certify that his own circumcision was for medical purposes because performing the procedure for religious reasons was not allowed in the former Soviet Union. When he first heard of the Cologne decision, he said he thought the court ruling was being misinterpreted.

"We thought it was a mistake, that it could not be true that something like circumcision could be forbidden in Germany," he said.

But because of the religious significance, he said, they had the circumcision done, despite fears that other courts might follow the ruling even if it did not set a precedent.

"It was important enough to risk," he said.

The most disturbing part of the ruling for Jews and Muslims is the court's contention that being circumcised "runs contrary to the interest of the child to later choose his religious affiliation," said Josh Spinner, an American rabbi who grew up in Hamilton, Canada, and has been in Berlin for more than a decade.

"I'm a circumcised male, I expect that I have the right to become a Catholic or Protestant or Buddhist or atheist if I choose to today. But what the court is saying is that if I am circumcised I am a Jew," he said. "There's a very dark and very illiberal view of what this mark does on the individual."

Around 250,000 Jews live in Germany today, and about 4 million Muslims ? the largest minority among Germany's 82 million population.

Spinner said the ruling has the potential of opening the door to even greater restrictions on religious freedom for minorities ? a particularly sensitive issue in Germany given the years of state-imposed anti-Jewish measures under the Nazis that preceded the Holocaust.

"Germany needs to understand that if they want to tolerate Jews then they need to tolerate Judaism," Spinner said.

Chancellor Angela Merkel acknowledged the same concern behind closed doors in a meeting this week with her party leaders, saying "I don't want Germany to be the only country in the world in which Jews cannot perform their rituals," according to an official who was present.

Immediately following the court ruling, however, Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle was alone among top officials to speak out on the issue. He offered assurances that "the free exercise of religion is protected in Germany ? that includes religious traditions."

In the past week, however, Merkel's spokesman Steffen Seibert has weighed in several times, promising that the government will come up with a solution that will allow the practice.

And in Parliament on Thursday, lawmakers from several parties adopted a resolution urging the government to draft a new law by the fall guaranteeing Muslims and Jews the right to continue circumcising their boys.

"Jewish and Muslim religious life must continue to be possible in Germany," the lawmakers said in the two-page resolution. "The circumcision of boys for Jews and Muslims has a central religious importance."

Had the government spoken out strongly sooner, said Goldberg, Germany may have managed to prevent the discussion from turning into an "us vs. them" embroilment.

"I get a lot of emails from non-Jewish Germans saying things like 'if you don't like it, leave Germany' ? very anti-Semitic. It's a bad atmosphere," said the rabbi, who immigrated to Germany 19 years ago from Israel and now lives in the southeastern city of Hof.

"Nobody said anything aside from Westerwelle, so that is also partially the fault of the government."

Joerg van Essen, parliamentary chief whip of the Free Democrats, Merkel's junior coalition partner, said that drafting the resolution to protect circumcisions took time because lawmakers needed to carefully balance constitutionally guaranteed religious freedoms and parental rights with the safety of the child.

"It's a relatively small procedure for the child, but banning it would be a big encroachment on religious freedom and the right of the parents to decide how to raise their children," he said.

Furer said he hoped that the circumcision debate would be expose more Germans to other religious ideas.

"I think a lot of Germans don't understand our religion and our religious issues," he said.

Situation Awareness: A Training Paradox | Diver Magazine

Photo: L. Newman

Text by Jeremy Heywood

Correction: When this story appeared in DIVER Volume 37 Number 4, Dr. Mica Endsley was inadvertently referred to as he, not she. We apologize for this error.

Experts agree: situation awareness is critically important to diver safety. But because it?s regarded as an advanced skill gained through experience it?s not included in the entry-level diver-training curriculum. As the complexity of recreational and tec/rec diving activities and equipment continue to increase, does this critical contradiction become a paradox we can no longer ignore.

Situation awareness (SA), or situational awareness in diving circles, is ?knowing what is going on around you?, according to an expert view in Theoretical Underpinnings of Situation Awareness: A Critical Review. More precisely it?s the ?perception of the elements in the environment within a volume of time and space, the comprehension of their meaning and the projection of their status in the near future,? according to the authors of Design and Evaluation for Situation Awareness Enhancement. Operators in rigorous, data intensive vocations such as military combat and flying air (and space) craft have long understood that effective SA plays a vital role in making accurate decisions. Every diver would be served well to understand this too.

?SA plays a big part in the dive and dive planning,? says Chief Petty Officer Second Class Rob DeProy, Chief Diver for the Mine Countermeasures Department at the Royal Canadian Navy?s Fleet Diving Unit (Pacific). ?With good SA the dive team can plan for such things as current, low visibility and potential failures in-water.? DeProy believes that SA is equally important in the recreational realm because sport divers lack the considerable ?SA-boosting? resources available to Navy divers such as surface support and reliable communications gear.

Information Overload?
Indeed, today?s divers are presented with an overwhelming amount of information to process during each trip into the ?unforgiving alien world,? as DeProy describes the aquatic environment. They must practice the cornerstone precepts of diving safety: breathe always ? never hold your breath, equalize early and often, ascend slowly. They must be acutely aware of their surroundings in three dimensions. They must continually monitor their depth, time and decompression status, more often than not using a dive computer or computers that present them with a large amount of data on a tiny screen. They must track the status of their buddy. And they must do all this while breathing compressed gas from an intricate piece of equipment while remaining constantly vigilant for signs of physiological perils such as narcosis, decompression sickness and cold. Good SA allows divers to perceive useful information, comprehend its importance and project possible future outcomes, therefore enabling effective decision making.

?I think the most important thing that you can train experienced divers to do is to work on projection and contingency planning skills,? says Dr. Mica R. Endsley, president of SA Technologies. Acknowledged as a world leader in the study of SA, Endsley told DIVER that, ?People with the highest levels of SA, in every domain we have studied, are those who spend their time projecting ahead to what could possibly happen or go wrong and to figure out in advance what they would do in that situation. ?It makes decision making under often very stressful conditions much easier and much faster,? she said. ?Even experienced divers who panic or don?t think ahead can get into trouble quickly,? she notes, adding, ?This is a quite trainable skill that can be taught and reinforced during training and regular dives.?

Training and Experience
The importance of SA for divers seems obvious, but can it really be taught? Ocean Quest Dive Centre?s Greg McCracken, a PADI Course Director and DSAT Technical Instructor Trainer, thinks that SA should be introduced to entry level divers. ?It?s a very important aspect of diving and it may also be one of the most difficult skills to acquire,? he said. McCracken feels that in order to develop SA, divers need to follow a specific training path and gain experience. ?Both are essential,? he emphasizes.

So, the paradox: SA provides concrete benefits for improving diver safety while remaining a maddeningly intangible skill, seemingly beyond the reach of the entry-level diver. It?s true that some implicit awareness of the situation is a required part of entry-level scuba training. In order to maintain contact with a buddy, there must be awareness of his or her whereabouts. There must be an awareness of the submersible pressure gauge (SPG) dial to avoid running out of breathing gas, etc. However, no entry-level students are trained how to collect, evaluate, plan and act in an organized way on all of the disparate pieces of information presented during a dive.

General Principles

Gavin Wuttken, Diving Safety Officer at the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium in Tacoma, Washington, also believes that entry level divers should receive instruction in SA and its general principles, and must, ?Be evaluated in confined and open water on their ability to recognize, evaluate and act, based on data gathered.?? He focuses his students? thinking about SA by asking them after a dive to recall details about physiology, equipment, environmental conditions, animal behaviour and contingency planning. Such an approach is simple and intuitive, and reinforces the divers? attention to detail on subsequent dives. This ?recall? exercise strengthens the framework for data acquisition and evaluation. He also thinks that the study of SA should continue through dive certification levels where it can be explored more deeply with a ?stronger emphasis and evaluation on probability/contingency planning.?

Although SA is not presented as a stand-alone topic in the PADI Open Water Diver course, Randy Giles, Regional Manager for PADI Canada, agrees it is an important component of any diver-training course. ?Whether integrated into a scuba diving course curriculum or pulled out as a separate topic within that curriculum, SA remains an important part of the diver safety toolkit and is a critical topic of discourse that we should continue to encourage,? Giles says.

SA Demons
Identifying how Endsley?s so-called SA demons, discussed in her co-authored book Designing for Situation Awareness: An approach to User Centered Design, affect new divers, and developing exercises to address them, may be a useful starting point for integration of focused SA training into the mainstream entry-level diver curriculum. For instance, one SA Demon is ?attentional tunneling?, or fixating on one set of information to the exclusion of others. To combat this tendency in new divers, perhaps the ubiquitous ?breathe always, never hold your breath? mantra could become ?breathe always, never hold your breath and always look around?. In other words, if new divers are asked to incorporate into their mental routine a phrase that reminds them that not holding their breath will reduce their chance of experiencing a devastating lung-over pressure injury, then why not also include one that will increase their chance of making the right decision during a stressful event? Wuttken?s straightforward recall exercise also tackles attentional tunneling by prompting divers to consider a wide array of dive data, and data overload, by helping divers identify useful rather than extraneous information.

Modifying the entry level curriculum to deal with these SA demons could be a useful strategy for strengthening the integration of SA into everyday diving activities, especially for that majority of divers who never progress past the basic certification. Understanding the foundation theory of SA is a useful pursuit for the advanced practitioner, but it is the dissemination and implementation of clear and simple techniques that will inoculate the new diver with SA. In turn, SA will improve the safety of diving in general, just as it has done for a host of other complex occupations.

Situational Awareness Demons ?

  • Attentional tunneling: fixating on one set of information to the exclusion of others.
  • Requisite memory trap: relying on limited short-term (working) memory.
  • Stressors: some stressors reduce the capacity to process information.
  • Data overload: overwhelming amounts of data can reduce SA.
  • Misplaced salience: Flashing red lights can be useful. Or not.
  • Complexity creep: systems with too many features make it difficult to develop an accurate mental model of how the system works.
  • Errant mental model: use of the wrong mental model leads to misinterpretation of information.
  • Out-of-the-loop syndrome: automation can undermine SA.

Why Learning Music Is Essential For Children

There is something that many parents want to make sure that their children have available to them and that is music. When you have music in your life, you are often going to see benefits that are not available to those that do not have music in their lives. Although those benefits may differ from one individual to another, here are some of the more specific that are seen. You will be happy to know, many of these are seen, regardless of whether it is a piano lesson that is being given or if it is guitar lessons for beginners that are given to your children.

If there is one thing that is well known about any type of music lessons it is the fact that you're going to need to practice regularly. That's why many children who are taking these types of lessons have discipline that is not typically available to other children. This not only benefits them in the fact that they are able to learn to have music in their lives in a unique way, it also gives them the discipline necessary to achieve higher grades at school and even to achieve more out of their life.

Another thing that should be considered about music lessons is the fact that it can give your child some coordination as well. The dexterity that is necessary to play the guitar and the strength in the fingers that is necessary for playing the piano has been well-established. This is also something that is going to show benefit to your child throughout their entire life as well.

Of course, simply having music in your life is going to benefit you in ways that you may not understand if you did not have music in your life. Although it is certainly true that most people enjoy music, many of them tend to overlook the intricacies of the music that they are enjoying. When your child takes music lessons, they are going to learn to have an ear for those items as well as having more of an appreciation for the music that they hear.

Since it is well-established that music lessons are going to be of benefit to your child, how can you pick a music teacher who will teach your child such an important part of their lives? Actually, there are a few different considerations for this purpose. If you're going to be playing a larger instrument, such as the piano, then it is obvious that you need to choose learning at home or learning in another area. Whether or not you have a piano in your home is often going to dictate that for you. Other instruments, such as the guitar can easily be transported. You should also choose a teacher that is a comfortable fit for both you and the child. It may take a little bit of looking in order to find such a teacher but when you find them, you will find that everybody enjoys the benefits as a result.

(AP) ? The next time your car hits a pothole, a new technology could help you immediately tell someone who can do something about it.

Boston officials are testing an app called Street Bump that allows drivers to automatically report the road hazards to the city as soon as they hear that unfortunate "thud," with their smartphones doing all the work.

The app's developers say their work has already sparked interest from other cities in the U.S., Europe, Africa and elsewhere that are imagining other ways to harness the technology.

Before they even start their trip, drivers using Street Bump fire up the app, then set their smartphones either on the dashboard or in a cup holder. The app takes care of the rest, using the phone's accelerometer ? a motion-detector ? to sense when a bump is hit. GPS records the location, and the phone transmits it to a remote servers hosted by Amazon Inc.'s Web services division.

The system filters out things like manhole covers and speed bump using a series of algorithms ? including one that can tell if the initial motion is up over a speed bump, as opposed to down into a pothole. If at least three people hit a bump in the same spot, the system recognizes it as a pothole.

As in many northern cities, potholes are a real problem for Boston, where crews patch about 19,000 of them a year following the annual freeze-thaw cycle, according to Matthew Mayrl, chief of staff in the city's public works department.

"So you can imagine that driving 806 miles of roadway and getting an accurate count of where every pothole is a gigantic task," he said.

City officials hope the app might eventually allow them to save money by creating a real-time map of potholes that need to be fixed and eliminating the need to send out city trucks or contract an engineering company to troll hundreds of miles of roadways looking for damage.

"What this technology allows us to do ? because we imagine dozens and hundreds and possibly thousands of people using it ? it essentially creates a new way for people to donate their data in solving public-good challenges," said Nigel Jacob, co-chairman of the Boston Mayor's Office of New Urban Mechanics, which manages the project.

Street Bump is different from Boston's first app, Citizen Connect, which required users to actively send a text of tweet, visit a website or call a 24-hour hotline to report a pothole or other nuisances. Other cities, including Honolulu, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio, have encouraged residents to report potholes using Facebook, Twitter, or special apps that allow residents to request city services using their smartphones.

Street Bump became available for free in the iTunes store in June, and experts are working on the Android version.

Jacob said "a couple of hundred" of users have downloaded the app so far, and developers are still trying to figure out how many will be needed to make the software more useful. The project's next big phase, he said, will be expanding the app to other cities in a couple of months and beginning to analyze the data to figure out ways to refine the app Authorities intend to launch a campaign on social and other media to encourage more people to use the app, Jacob said, adding that the details have yet to be worked out.

Street Bump, which cost a total of $45,000 from Boston city coffers and insurer Liberty Mutual Group Inc. to develop the prototype and award experts a prize to craft ways filter out false positives, was conceived by Jacob's office and developed by Worcester Polytechnic Institute professor Fabio Carrera, with help from a group he's working with at the Santa Fe Complex, a community organization in New Mexico.

The first version collected lots of data but couldn't differentiate between potholes and other bumps. So InnoCentive Inc., a Waltham, Mass., crowdsourcing firm, threw the challenge out to a network of 400,000 experts and offered them a share of $25,000 in prize money donated by Liberty Mutual.

In the end, ideas were incorporated from three places ? a group of hackers in Somerville, Mass., that promotes community education and research; the head of the mathematics department at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich.; and a software engineer who did not want to be identified.

There has been so much interest from other cities in the U.S. and abroad that Boston is preparing to release the code to the public by the end of the summer so others can tweak the software for their needs. Proposals include using it for early detection of earthquakes and creating a "black box" for police cruisers that could show whether a vehicle was stationary or moving before a crash to stop people who hit parked police cars from claiming officers crashed into them.

"I think people are really interested in the concept," Jacob said. "Right now, the feedback we've gotten is ... 'Very interesting app, how do we use it in our city?'"
