SpaceX capsule hits glitch after launch for space station

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida | Fri Mar 1, 2013 3:14pm EST

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - A rocket built by Space Exploration Technologies blasted off on Friday on supply run to the International Space Station, but a thruster problem with the cargo ship threatened to derail the mission.

The 157-foot (48-meter) tall Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon cargo ship lifted off at 10:10 a.m. EST from the company's leased launch pad at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, just south of NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

"It appears that although it achieved Earth orbit, Dragon is experiencing some kind of problem right now," John Insprucker, a Falcon 9 manager with Space Exploration Technologies, or SpaceX as the company is known, said during a webcast after the capsule's release into orbit.

The Dragon capsule, which carries more than 2,300 pounds (1,043 kg) of science equipment, spare parts, food and supplies, is scheduled to reach the station Saturday morning.

Engineers, however, were troubleshooting a problem with three of the capsule's four thruster pods, which are needed to maneuver in orbit and position the ship's solar arrays to face the sun.

"Holding on solar array deployment until at least two thruster pods are active," company founder and Chief Executive Elon Musk posted on Twitter.

The arrays were later deployed even though three of the four thruster pods were not operational, said SpaceX spokeswoman Christine Ra.

The glitch occurred about 11 minutes after liftoff, when the capsule's solar wings were to unfurl. SpaceX's onboard cameras did not show that happening.

The cargo run is the second of 12 missions for privately owned SpaceX under a $1.6 billion NASA contract.

Following a successful test flight to the space station in May 2012, SpaceX conducted its first supply run to the orbital outpost in October. During launch of that mission, one of the Falcon's nine engines shut down early, but the other motors compensated for the power shortfall.

The problem was traced to an engine material flaw, SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell said on Thursday.

ANOTHER FREIGHTER ON THE WING

"The conclusions they came to, we agree with," added NASA space station program manager Mike Suffredini.

"Our role as NASA is to sit next to them and work with them and understand the anomaly so that we're comfortable. We have two options as the customer: We can either put our hardware on that vehicle or not," he said.

A second space freighter, built by Orbital Sciences Corp, is expected to debut this year.

NASA turned to private companies to ferry supplies to the Space Station, a $100 billion project of 15 nations, following the retirement of its shuttle fleet in 2011. Staffed by rotating crews of six, the orbiting laboratory flies about 250 miles above the Earth.

With the shuttles grounded, NASA plans to hire private firms to fly astronauts as well as cargo, breaking Russia's monopoly on crew transport that costs more than $60 million per trip.

U.S. government spending cuts said to begin Saturday do not impact space station operations or supply runs, NASA's Suffredini said.

But the cutbacks, implemented under the "sequestration" law, will slow development of privately owned space taxis.

NASA has partnership agreements worth more than $1.1 billion through May 2014 with SpaceX, Boeing Co and privately owned Sierra Nevada Corp to develop passenger spacecraft.

Because of the expected budget cuts, NASA would effectively halt space taxi development work this summer. Under sequestration, the agency expects its $17.8 billion budget to drop to $16.9 billion, NASA administrator Charles Bolden wrote in a letter last month to Senate Appropriations Committee chairwoman Barbara Mikulski.

"Overall availability of commercial crew transportation services would be significantly delayed, thereby extending our reliance on foreign providers for crew transportation to the International Space Station," Bolden wrote.

daydaily ? Blog Archive ? Properly Replacing Your Window

Written on February 28, 2013 ? 10:41 pm | by guest writer |

window
Replacing windows is a home improvement project to do if existing windows are not energy efficient. This is a common option for homeowners wishing to reduce energy costs. However, a standard or custom replacement window can be ordered at a home improvement store or from a local window company ? like Home Exterior Systems in Houston.

?

Measure the Window

Proper measurements are required before beginning any window replacement project. A measurement is needed of the width and height of the existing window opening. This will need to be done from inside the house, as replacement windows are not installed from the outside. Windows need to be measured from the jamb on one side to the jamb on the other; measure from the inside of each jamb to obtain the width. Make sure to get a measurement at the top, the middle, and the bottom. The smallest measurement will need to be used. The height of the window is measured from the inside top of the sill to the inside of the top jamb. Record each measurement to use later when ordering the new replacement windows.

?

Remove Old Window

Remove the decorative trim around the perimeter of the window by using a pry bar. Remove the stops on each of the sashes. This can be done with a screwdriver or by using the pry bar. Removing the stops will need to be done carefully to limit damage to the window opening. Save the stops because they can be used when the new window is ready to be installed. The sash should be removed next. Look to see if the window has a sash cord or rope that will need to be cut. The outside sash will then need to be pulled down before taking off the parting beads. Take off the outside sash, but make sure to leave the stops in place.

?

Clean Window Opening

Scrape off old paint and take off any pieces of trim that surround the window opening. The jambs will need to be examined for any holes and splintered wood. Sand the wood smooth and fill holes by using wood putty. Pieces of fiberglass insulation can also be used as this will help with heat loss. Clean using a vacuum or brush to remove any debris from the sill.

?

Dry-Fit New Window

Place the new window in the opening to test the fit. This will determine if shims or other measures are needed when securing the window. Look on each side of the window to locate the mounting holes. Remove the window and set it aside.

?

Prepare Window Frame

Apply a bead of silicone caulk to the perimeter of the window frame. The caulk helps to weatherproof the window by keeping out air. Set the header piece on top of the replacement window and apply caulk across the top.

?

Install the Window

Set the new replacement window in the window frame. Check with a level. Square the window by placing shims in-between the window and the frame. The shims should stick out at three to four inches. Insert the mounting screws and tighten with a power drill. There may be gaps between the window and the frame. These gaps can easily be filled by using spray foam insulation. Open and then close the window to test its operation. Adjust the screws if the sashes are difficult to open. The last step is to knock out the shims.

Pope Benedict's ends pontificate, leaving papacy vacant

MADRID, Feb 27 (Reuters) - Lionel Messi has rarely been accused of failing to deliver in big games, having scored in two European Cup finals, but after subdued performances against AC Milan and Real Madrid, questions are being asked. The four-times World Player of the Year and leading scorer in one of the greatest club teams of all time, was a shadow of his usual self at the San Siro in a Champions League last-16 first leg last week, when Barcelona slumped to a 2-0 defeat. ...

WTAPS 2013 Spring/Summer "Philosophy" Collection | Hypebeast

Japanese brand WTAPS presents its spring/summer season ?Philosophy? collection. While the military influences are certainly present in the coats, cargos and shorts, the collection branches out with more familiar items like denim, gingham check and striped shirts. Despite the various influences going into Philosophy, the underlining feel of the collection is laid back with unrestricted movement backed by solid and reliable materials. Most indicative of this fusion of elements is the long-flowing soutien collar coat in navy, olive drab, or woodland camo featuring a both water-repellent and breathable TETRATEX construction backed by a gingham check lining.

Michael Jordan Buys Massive North Carolina ... - AOL Real Estate

Michael Jordan home, Charlotte, N.C.

NBA legend Michael Jordan is best known for scoring on the basketball court, but these days he's netting a lot more than three-pointers. Jordan's a pro in real estate, too, it seems -- because he's just gotten a huge deal on his second home in the Charlotte, N.C., area. The b-ball star and Charlotte Bobcats owner bought a 12,310-square-foot home on North Carolina's Lake Norman for $2.8 million, the Charlotte Observer reported.

Michael JordanThe waterfront mansion was a foreclosure that the bank repossessed last August, according to Zillow. It was listed for $3.49 million, so Jordan must have some negotiating skills. The six-bedroom, eight-bathroom home sits on the seventh hole of The Peninsula Club. We're not sure whether that's a good thing, since Jordan has a knack for getting kicked out of swanky country clubs for violating dress codes.

His Airness collects homes like NBA trophies: Jordan also has a luxury condo in Charlotte, he recently built a $12.4 million mansion in Jupiter, Fla., (where Celine Dion lives), and he has a place in Salt Lake City. He's still trying to offload his custom home in Chicago for $29 million. Jordan's new home happens to be where drag racing star Doug Herbert used to live. Herbert told the Observer that the house "is a great place to entertain friends and have people over."

The three-level home has a fitness center and a two-story great room that opens to a terraced patio. There's a large pool and spa in the backyard, as well as a boat slip and unparalleled panoramic lake views. "It's fantastic," Dave Gilroy, commissioner of the town of Cornelius, where Jordan's new home is, told the Observer. "He got a great buy on that house."

Promote Your Book Out of Town | Writing and Publishing News

This is excerpted from my latest ebooklet which I will offer for free as soon as I get it finished (maybe today). It?s called, ?50 Ways to Sell Your Book Through Your Personality.?

If you have a book to promote, you?ll probably be out doing some public speaking to bring attention to it. This is highly recommended. Well, you?ll most likely be more warmly welcomed and your programs more well-attended when you speak locally, where you are known. But if you have a trip planned or your book is connected in some way to another city or state, I urge you to consider traveling and speaking. Maybe you live in Mississippi, but your novel is set in Connecticut. See about speaking to residents at various venues in this state. If you?re planning to visit family in another city, set up radio interviews, book signings and speaking engagements while there.

I often combine pleasure and business when I travel. Once when I visited a friend in Arizona, I arranged to speak to a group of writers at a local library. We took a trip to Nashville and I met with a group of writers in a large bookstore there. I find that it helps to have the assistance and support of locals to help you set up these out-of-town events. This is just another reason why it is important that you spend time researching organizations online and connecting with others in your field, industry, interest or genre.

In my situation, I am already known through many channels related to publishing and book promotion because of my longtime and ongoing article contributions to industry publications, my appearances at so many writing conferences, my high-profile status as executive director of SPAWN, my eight-year-old daily blog and so forth. So when I plan a trip out of town, I do an Internet search for writers? groups in the area. I contact group leaders as far in advance as I can?a year or several months is ideal?and try to set something up. In this case, the writers? group leader already has venues in mind, she or he has access to their groups? email list. They do the promo. All I have to do is show up.

But keep in mind, that I may not have been invited if I hadn?t taken the initiative and made the contact. Here?s another reminder that YOU need to think of yourself as the CEO of your book?foremost and always.

This ebooklet will cover 50 types of promotion you can do personally and many tips for participating in them. Watch for this valuable freebie to come to Patriciafry.com. In the meantime, you can still download 50 Ways to Prepare for Publishing Success. FREE. http://www.patriciafry.com

If you missed my other two ebooklets which I offered for free for a period, you can still order them for $3.95 here: http://www.matilijapress.com They are ?50 Ways to Sell Your Ebooks.? (You?ll be amazed at some of the ideas) and ?50 Reasons Why You Should Publish That Book.? (This ebooklet will let you know if you are ready to publish or not.)
