Gamers have always been split on the motion controls debate. Some have embraced the likes of Kinect, PlayStation Move and the Wii while others contend there?s just no place for them when it comes to hardcore gaming.
The developer of a rcent Kickstarter project has come to the conclusion that the use of motion control is exactly why his Kickstarter is failing. Kostas Zarifis? game, Kung Fu Superstars uses Kinect to teach the player real kung fu moves, as well as telling the story of wannabe stuntman, Danny. The game looks good, it?s being developed by people who have worked on some great games and there?s even an endorsement by Peter Molyneux in the video.
It seems like the project should be succeeding but it?s got under 5 days to go and only ?40,000 ($64,000) of the ?200,000 ($320,080) target has been funded by a mere 440 people (at press time).
Kostas said that hardcore gamers treat motion games with ?hatred,? not indifference. He also noted they have good reason to as a lot of motion games haven?t?delivered?what they promised such as Star Wars and Steel Battalion. Kostas and his team wanted to change peoples opinions of motion controls but he now thinks that time has passed as obviously, people just don?t care about them?any more? He also says that they were too slow to mention that Kung Fu Superstars is not entirely motion controlled, it uses a traditional controller too. Apparently at tech demos where they?ve shown off the game, when people saw how they blended motion controls with a controller, the game was called ?innovative? and got a positive response.
Kostas also blames the confusion between the UK Kickstarter site and the US one, stating that American users were having problems funding the project and he would have?preferred?to launch the project in the US, despite it being more hassle.
Perhaps it?s time for developers to listen to what gamers really want ? whilst kids and casual gamers like Kinect dancing games and Wii Sports, it seems the rest of us are not so keen. Let us know what you prefer, motion controls or physical controllers?
